Why I spent money to wake up at 4:30 a.m. and be yelled at

Mostly because I’m crazy.

Really.

This morning I woke up on my own at 4:32 a.m. I think it was mostly because I was afraid of sleeping through my alarm clock when it went off at 5 a.m. But because I’ve been congested and needed to drink a lot of water in order to clear out my throat, I went ahead and got up.

As I read yesterday’s newspaper, waiting for it to be time to go, once again I thought, I’m crazy.

But when I got to the Y and saw 20 other people there, too, I was slightly comforted. At least I’m not the only crazy one.

As I mentioned last week, starting today until October 24, I’m taking part in a boot camp class three mornings (cancel that – early mornings) a week. Today was the first day.

It was hard.

I was fine during the running, and even during the 90-second jumping jack intervals. I could do lunges and squats. But the push-ups, and the ‘mountain-climbers’ and the ‘bicycles’ – they killed me. After doing all that, Ervin (The Instructor, aka Buffest Man Alive) said, “Alright! Now we’re gonna do some abs!”

You’ve got to give him credit for cheerfulness, but what have we been doing for the last 10 minutes?

Overall, it was a great workout, and I’m actually looking forward to Wednesday.

Honestly, though, at one point this morning, I thought to myself, “Can I do this?”

Only by the grace of God.
